About
Children's Musical Theaterworks offers activities that include a Spring Break Camp held April 11–15, 2021, rehearsals, and small scale productions. The program also produces main stage musicals, including a Summer Mainstage, and offers school field trips, classes, and camps.
• Ages: 6–18 years old
• Price: School day performances have always been at deeply discounted prices.
Children's Musical Theaterworks is the Valley's only non-profit theater company dedicated to the training of young performers in the area of musical theater and the arts. Since 2001, the Fresno Memorial Auditorium has served as Children's Musical Theaterworks' theatrical homebase, and in 2001 the organization took over for Fresno Playhouse's at that venue. The organization is funded in part by the City of Fresno Measure P Expanded Access to Arts and Culture Fund administered by the Fresno Arts Council and is proudly supported by the Leon S. Peters Foundation. CMT was invited by Disney to premiere The Little Mermaid Jr in 2014, marking the 46th production at Memorial, and presented Disney’s Hunchback of Notre Dame in the summer of 2017 as a central valley premiere and one of the first productions of the title in the country. All who audition are cast, and CMT has instituted a sponsor program for performers to offset tuition costs. A number of young performers have become staff as stage managers, costumers, set designers, and directors, and numerous directors for main stage shows started as young actors with CMT. Teens ages 14–20 will take the stage in the Broadway classic 42nd Street, and younger performers ages 6–13 will present Rodgers & Hammerstein’s Cinderella - Youth Edition. Due to new Disney ticketing restrictions, CMT is no longer able to produce Moana. Over time, 113,000 audience members of all ages have attended regular performances, 73,000 students from throughout the valley have attended school day performances, and 3,550 young performers have participated in musical theater productions described as a Broadway experience in the central valley.
