Arnold D. Haskell founded Sherman Library & Gardens in 1966, and the cultural center dates back to the 1950s. Over the course of a decade, he acquired nearby lots until he owned the entire block in 1967, and he donated the land to The Sherman Foundation, which he and Sherman’s daughters established in 1951. The Sherman Foundation opened the first part of the Gardens in 1966, and between 1966 and 1974 the facilities took shape. Today Sherman Library & Gardens is described as a premier botanical garden and outstanding research library with collections related to the history of the Pacific Southwest, and it is described as a nationally renowned botanical garden.
The mission of Sherman Library & Gardens is described as a monument to Haskell’s dream of an educational and cultural center, with an outstanding research library focused on the history of the Pacific Southwest. The organization’s leadership includes Executive Director Scott LaFleur, Managing Director – Philanthropy Alexandra Anderson, Marketing Director Donna Carter, Education & Programs Director Lisa Wagner, Visitor Services Manager Megan Cordero, and the Sherman Library & Gardens Board of Trustees: Brad Avery, Tim Collins, Jennifer Cook, Dan Daniel, Gary Pickett, Judy Posnikoff, James Walkie Ray, Janet Ray, Peter Rooney, and Kristin Yokomoto.
Sherman Library & Gardens is described as an inspiring horticultural oasis with an open-air art exhibit during the Dog Days of Sherman. Some areas of the gardens may be temporarily closed off due to improvements and construction activity, the entrance is currently located on Dahlia Avenue during improvements, and the library gallery may be closed at various times for classes or scheduled events.
