Steve & Kate’s Camp started in 1980 and now has more than 70 locations described as “glorious islands of freedom” from Manhattan to Manhattan Beach. At Steve & Kate’s, campers choose which activities they do, whom they do it with, and for how long. The camp’s mission states that all year long kids are in rigid structure, and that in summer the camp gives them freedom to expand and evolve, using self-directed experiences as a kind of training ground for life where they are empowered, independent, resilient, and responsible for their own decisions.
The Corte Madera camp includes a Mentorship Program intended exclusively for children ages 14–15 at this location for Summer 2026, where Mentees help facilitate camp activities, engage with campers, and encourage camper connection and participation. The program utilizes self-directed learning to support Mentees in their development into young adults ready to take on more responsibilities, and returning Mentees pay $0 for the Mentorship Program.
Families can buy any number of days and send their child to camp on any day, with drop-off and pick-up at any time between 8:00am and 6:00pm included. All-inclusive rates cover all camp hours, snacks and lunch, and any activities that interest the child. Unused Day Passes are automatically refunded in full at the end of the season, and if a Summer Pass is underused, the difference between the pass cost and the daily rate is automatically refunded. Automatic full refunds for unused purchased Day Passes at the end of the season and automatic partial refunds for underused Summer Passes are part of the program’s payment structure.
From June 15–19, Monday–Friday features an inflatable obstacle course, with Water Play on Tuesday and Thursday, Go-Karts on Wednesday and Friday, and Friday Pie-Day with morning Go-Karts. For Go-Karts, helmets are provided for campers to use, and families may also send a labeled helmet from home. As summer approaches, registered families receive a virtual camp orientation with local camp drop-off and pick-up procedures, check-in and check-out details, what to bring, and what not to bring.
The camp is led by a Director named Emma. The Cove School, where the camp takes place, is ADA-accessible.
Testimonials describe the camp in various ways. Andrew Stanton, Director of WALL-E, Finding Nemo, and Finding Dory, says, “The children that attend Steve & Kate's blossom and discover a freedom of identity that, in a way, no other institution I've experienced has ever managed. Kids find their thumbprint at Steve & Kate's. My one complaint: Where were they when I was a kid?” Apple’s Hot News states, “If kids ruled the world, it might look something like Steve and Kate’s Camp.” Variety magazine notes that Steve and Kate’s Camp “didn’t set out to cater to the children of folks at Pixar, Industrial Light & Magic and the like, but given their philosophy, it’s no surprise so many attend.” The Washington Post describes it as “a blend of that traditional camp experience combined with a modern, tech-savvy touch” that “evokes a laid-back aura true to its California roots, complemented by the company’s Silicon Valley-inspired innovative approaches to everything from programming to payment.” The Chicago Tribune states, “Working parents’ worries dissipate as they contemplate Steve & Kate’s model.”
