Everyday Mandarin, a Higher Level Learning program, was founded in 2012, and its first class was an after school Mandarin class at Tobias Elementary School in Daly City. Program of Higher Level Learning, Inc. is described as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. Everyday Mandarin has over 25 teachers on staff, and teachers undergo rigorous training that prepares them for the classroom and for students who are accustomed to Western methodologies of instruction and classroom management. The program states that it uses full immersion online Mandarin classes for all levels and ages and that families can expect children to start speaking Mandarin around the house within 6 months of joining the online Chinese school. Everyday Mandarin states that it offers a 100% satisfaction guarantee with no contracts or deposits and refunds if they cannot rectify the situation.
The program’s mission states that its goal is more than just teaching Chinese language and that it aims to develop language proficiency and confidence so children speak Mandarin faster and naturally like a native speaker. The mission also states that the founders’ negative experience with Chinese school as a child guided the creation of Chinese language programs that will excite kids to love learning Chinese and Mandarin. Everyday Mandarin reports that teachers use only positive reinforcement and rewards, are empathetic and encouraging, and use behavior modification to get positive results and help students reach their Chinese language goals. The mission further states that the program wants to create an online and in-person community of students, parents, and teachers who can engage one another and share their passion for learning Mandarin, and that it makes learning Chinese and Mandarin engaging, relevant, and fun so children will be motivated to learn.
One parent, Carla Ng, reports that her children have been attending Everyday Mandarin since kindergarten, that they enjoy learning about their culture and language, and that Ms. Wu and staff teach Mandarin in a positive way and love their students. Another parent, Erine Budi, reports that her child enjoyed the summer camp, describes the teacher as patient and knowledgeable, notes that the child started talking in Mandarin and teaching Mandarin words at home, and mentions receiving many pictures from the camp.
