OC Junior Guards is a division of OC Lifeguards, which is a preventative lifeguard agency. OC Lifeguards has provided lifeguard service for Orange County since 1990 and is committed to educating the community about beach safety through informing patrons of hazards on the beach and through youth education programs. As an Advanced Lifeguard Agency certified by the United States Lifesaving Association, OC Lifeguards maintains standards for training, equipment, and statistical data and reporting related to marine safety services. The mission of OC Lifeguards is to preserve and protect life, safety, and the environment through vigilant observation, prevention, and response.
New students in OC Junior Guards are required to pass a swim test to participate, while an introductory junior guard experience for younger participants who are still building swimming skills does not require a swim test. In this introductory option, activities are conducted on the sand and in shallow water to prepare students for the next step in junior guards. Instructors in these programs are certified ocean lifeguards who work on local beaches to protect public safety. OC Lifeguards states that its lifeguards are trained in early recognition of hazards and proactive education of the public about possibly dangerous situations and how to avoid them, and that it aims for beach patrons to safely enjoy a day at the beach and gain understanding and appreciation of its diverse conditions.
