About

The Stan Cummings Scholars Internship Program is a year-long internship program for emerging marine scientists. Participants work on research projects on the water and in living laboratories. The program culminates with a symposium where students give presentations of their semester projects and engage the public.

• Ages: 14–18 years old
• Schedule: Year-long internship program

The program engages passionate and talented high school students, who receive guidance and support from Ocean Institute staff and outside researchers. The Ocean Institute, founded in 1977, is a community-based organization. Its mission statement is, “Using the ocean as our classroom, we inspire children to learn.” The Ocean Institute educates 100,000 children, teachers, parents, and visitors annually through over 30 marine science and maritime history programs. It received the inaugural Walter Cronkite Award for Excellence in Maritime Education from the National Maritime Historical Society in 1995 and the Sea Education Program of the Year Award from the American Sail Training Association in 1996. One testimonial states, “Ocean Institute programs have succeeded brilliantly in the most important mission: reaching and actively engaging the imagination of American youth.” – Walter Cronkite Award for Excellence in Maritime Education.
