Girl in the Curl Surf Camp is led by founder Mary Hartmann, who caught her first wave at Doheny State Beach in 1970, started “Swell Time Surf School” in 1987, and opened Girl in the Curl in 1997 as a just-for-girls surf shop and school. It was the first surf shop and surf school in Orange County designed for girls and is described as a safe spot for women to get stoked on all things surf, with every detail carefully designed and curated to deliver a vintage feminine oasis with a retro Hawaiian vibe and girlie-girl merchandise. The program’s mission is to provide a high-quality surfing experience for all regardless of age, ability, and surf level, with patient, professional instruction, excellent equipment, and the best waves possible, aiming for every customer to walk out feeling like they caught the best wave of the day. Instruction includes surf etiquette, the history of surfing, tides, and general ocean safety.

Girl in the Curl Surf Camp also provides education on sea life, hosts trash pickups, and strongly promotes reduce, reuse, and recycle, making it a priority to protect the ocean and the animals that call it home.
