Literacy Express

Literacy Express offers academic coaching and tutoring in reading, writing, and math for TK through 12th grade students. The program also provides Orton-Gillingham instruction, which is a structured, multisensory approach to teaching reading, spelling, and writing. In addition to student tutoring, Literacy Express offers training in literacy and math instruction for TK and Pre-K teachers, as well as professional development for classroom teachers.

Literacy Express was founded by Deb Storey. The Literacy Express team is comprised of credentialed, degreed, experienced, caring, and passionate teachers. The program provides training for classroom teachers for school TK and Pre-K programs and has provided professional development to Blackwater Community School and Gila Crossing Community School under the Native Youth Community Project Grant.

Parents describe children “absolutely LOVE coming to Literacy Express” and “jumping for joy” about attending sessions. One parent reports that Literacy Express “has been a vital part of my son's kindergarten year” and that her son now enjoys math and reading because of how the material is taught. Another parent shares that her daughter has attended for nearly two years and that the tutoring sessions carry over into the classroom, and that her daughter leaves sessions “with a giant smile.” A parent whose children have attended since pre-K notes that the pre-K program set the foundation for their reading and writing and that the environment is both fun and challenging. Other parents describe the tutors as “phenomenal,” “highly dedicated, enthusiastic, knowledgeable, and caring,” and mention that tutors coordinate directly with classroom teachers when needed. A school representative from Arizona thanks the team for “outstanding professional development” and reports that teacher feedback showed a commitment to implementing the strategies presented.
