About
UC Davis College of Engineering Youth Outreach STEM Programs introduces youth to science, technology, engineering and mathematics through activities such as computing and robotics technology, hands-on and lab intensive curricula, and full day immersion into STEM. Programs include an intensive four-week summer residential program called COSMOS, STEM for Girls, the Mathematics Engineering Science Achievement (MESA) Schools Program, and outreach from the UC Davis EcoCAR team. Families, students and teachers can also use the UC Davis STEM Portal to search for summer camps, tours, programs and internships related to STEM.
• Ages: 10–18 years old
• Schedule: COSMOS is an intensive four-week summer residential program.
The UC Davis College of Engineering states that its mission is to provide engaging programs and resources for introducing youth to STEM. Through investments in K–12 outreach efforts, the college focuses on a new generation of engineering professionals and future leaders. The UC Davis Computing, Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics Center develops computing and robotics technology, curriculum and teaching strategies, and supports teachers in integrating computing and robotics in the classroom.
The MESA Schools Program prepares K–12 students in Sacramento and Yolo counties in STEM subjects and bridges classroom concepts to real-world practice, and its college prep program focuses on students’ academic journeys to higher education. COSMOS serves students completing grades 8–12, who are mentored by faculty, researchers and scientists while exploring advanced STEM topics beyond the courses typically offered in California high schools. STEM for Girls invites 10–12 year old students from the Woodland and Sacramento areas for a full day focused on science, technology, engineering and math and introduces them to STEM role models. The UC Davis EcoCAR team spends time with youth to teach them about electric vehicles and connect them with automotive engineering topics. The UC Davis STEM Portal is described as a go-to resource for STEM at UC Davis and allows users to search for opportunities by audience, resource, discipline and areas of study.
