Free Flight Exotic Bird Sanctuary was established in 1981 as a boarding and breeding facility and became a nonprofit in March of 2009. All staff are trained avian specialists and educators. The leadership team includes Executive Director Isabelle Zapata and Avian Husbandry and Education Programs Assistant Brice Munoz, along with board and advisory members Lauren Alvarez, Mary Struble, Frank Napolitano, Rebecca Koller, Caroline Morrison, and Camille Rosefeld. Free Flight offers educational programs for adults and children, hosts field trips, and brings education programs to schools, libraries, nursing homes, and community events. The organization states that parrots in the wild exist in complex ecological and social environments and that, because companion parrots are only one or two generations out of the wild, these experiences must be recreated for them in captivity.
