Downey Better Baseball was established in 2012. Its mission is to provide qualified coaching, proper technique, and discipline so participants continue to develop and grow as athletes and as citizens of the City of Downey. The mission also states that the program aims to provide a quality learning environment for youth athletes in Downey and surrounding communities and that it was established on preparing players for a competitive level of play at high school and college levels.

The program offers a wide range of educational and leadership activities and is committed to transforming youth into natural-born leaders. It focuses on teamwork, skill development, and sportsmanship. Downey Better Baseball provides young athletes with facilities and equipment to develop their skills and offers scholarships for young athletes in the community. The program has a partnership with local businesses in Downey to support these scholarships and holds an annual fundraiser at the Stonewood Mall. The leadership team includes Jose Rodriguez, who serves as a leadership coach. The program also shares a newsletter to keep the community informed about updates.
