About
Trilogy Martial Arts offers Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Kids Jiu-Jitsu, Adult Jiu-Jitsu, Jeet Kune Do, wrestling, boxing, yoga, and a women-only W.A.S.P. (Women’s Awareness Self Protection) program. Kids Jiu-Jitsu includes anti-bullying instruction that covers when to walk away, when to tell an adult, and what to do when those options do not work. The program includes a free week trial that allows one full week of classes with no card, no contract, and no obligation.
• Ages: 5–18 years old
• Schedule: Kids classes available Monday, Wednesday, and Friday with afternoon class times, with a free trial that covers one full week of classes
Trilogy Martial Arts was founded in January 2017 and has been family owned since 2017. Sean Wheeler founded the gym after thirty years on the mats, starting in kickboxing at seventeen and then training in the Progressive Fighting System under Paul Vunak, and he trains in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu under Professor Marcel Louzado. The coaching staff holds black belts under Fabio Santos and Alfredo Barum and has decades of combined experience in wrestling, boxing, and self-defense instruction for law enforcement and military. The program’s mission states that students are pushed toward their own potential and are not measured against someone else’s. The academy offers six disciplines on one mat and is set up so parents and kids can both train, sometimes on the same evening, with beginners paired with beginners. Shy kids are specifically welcomed, and progress is measured against where each child started rather than against others. The W.A.S.P. Women’s Awareness Self Protection program is women only and is taught without a drill-sergeant style.
Trilogy Martial Arts is described in Google reviews as having skilled, knowledgeable, and patient coaches, a friendly vibe, highly qualified instructors, and a nice new facility. Reviews mention that it is recommended for kids and adults of all ages, including kids five and up, and that the environment feels welcoming and family-like. One review notes that Coach Orlando is patient but firm enough to keep kids focused and that he teaches real life lessons about bullying and self-defense. Another review highlights that the gym is great for beginners and very welcoming and friendly. The program is rated 5.0 on Google based on fourteen reviews, all of which are five-star ratings. Families mention a generous trial and a military discount, and the program notes that both military and active military discounts are available.
For a first class, families are told that kids should wear shorts without pockets or zippers and a t-shirt or rash guard, bring water, arrive with clean feet and short nails, and that a gi is not needed for the first week. If a student decides to keep training, staff help point them to the right size and style of gi. The academy notes that it is easy to reach for East County families, with Walmart and Smart & Final next door so parents can run errands during class.
