About

The LOFT Academy offers labs and workshops, a Middle School Cohort, one-to-one instruction, holiday camps, and summer camps. The program uses a project-based, STEAM-inspired curriculum with integrated learning across a wide variety of subjects. Adults in the program are referred to as Coaches or Facilitators, and students assess themselves and their own progress instead of receiving grades.

• Schedule: Holiday camps and summer camps

The LOFT Academy follows a student-centered pedagogy called Project-Based Learning (PBL), using “Essential Questions” and a focus on real-world problems for learners to explore and solve in creative and authentic ways. Programs are hands-on and tailored around the unique gifts of the child, with an emphasis on self-directed learning, student voice and choice, and exploration and experimentation rather than imparting knowledge. The environment is described as a compassionate and relaxed kids’ space, with diverse teaching styles and an integrated learning experience involving all the senses and overlapping areas of study. The program focuses on critical thinking, creativity, empathy, connection, autonomy, collaboration, respect, and social responsibility, and includes arts and design as an integral part of turning STEM into STEAM. Coaches ask questions, give hints but not answers, and ensure kids have control of their learning process, while the program does not prepare students for standardized testing. The LOFT Academy describes its approach as holistic, utilizing project-based learning, driving questions, and self-direction, and emphasizes development of 21st century skills such as problem solving, leadership, collaboration, written and verbal communication skills, and initiative. The LOFT Academy states that it provides the environment, facilitators, and materials for students to explore big ideas and develop projects.

The LOFT Academy states that it has been building community and connecting families since 2016. The program’s mission is “To inspire students to reach higher by creating an atmosphere of curiosity, self-discovery and big ideas.” The leadership team includes David, who can be contacted at [email protected].
