The Sri Sathya Sai Council of America, which coordinates this program, was established in 1975. The Sri Sathya Sai Organization of USA states that its main objective is to help humanity recognize its inherent divinity. The National S.A.I. (Schoolwork Assistance Initiative) Tutoring project initially focuses on children in grades 3, 4, and 5 from underserved schools, with volunteers connecting via teleconference to provide tutoring. A formative assessment is used to guide and instruct students to assist in making higher-level cognitive connections, and documents have been developed to help centers develop their programs and approach appropriate schools. Membership in the Sri Sathya Sai Organization of USA is free and open to all, and the organization is described as non-denominational and voluntary, with a Sai Spiritual Education (SSE) program for children and resources for teachers.
The SSIO-USA describes the National S.A.I. Tutoring project as a response to help communities throughout the country, with a goal of identifying schools, clubs, and other organizations that will be hit the hardest due to limited resources. Centers are provided resources to help them develop a team of volunteers who can provide help. On September 18, 2021, about 120 members, including adults, young adults, and Sai Spiritual Education students from Sai Centers across the nation, participated in a virtual SAI Tutoring Summit to connect and share their experience of providing learning support to underserved children. The Sri Sathya Sai Organization of USA reports having over 200 centers in all 50 states, coordinated by the Sri Sathya Sai Council of America, and being part of the Sri Sathya Sai International Organization based in 126 countries, with members collaborating with non-profit partners to increase their ability to reach as many people as possible.
