The Oakland Diocese Catholic Youth Organization is a church-sponsored athletic program for elementary and junior high age youth from the parishes of the Catholic Diocese of Oakland, and CYO offers parish-centered or Catholic school-centered teams. CYO teams are not club or city teams, and teams are offered for children in third through eighth grades. The CYO program states that, through the vehicle of sports, it provides youth with an opportunity to practice Christian attitudes and responsibilities and to become friends with other children throughout the diocese, and that CYO activities should be examples of the meaning of Christian sportsmanship. The program states that CYO Sports are offered by the Church as a ministry to young people and describes its approach as “Ministry through CYO Sports: Fun and Faith Together” and “Playing, Praying and Serving.”
The CYO Code of Conduct states that the Catholic Youth Organization, through the vehicle of sports, provides youth with an opportunity to practice Christian attitudes and responsibilities and to become friends with other children throughout the diocese, and that CYO activities should be examples of the meaning of Christian sportsmanship. Pope Francis is quoted in the program materials describing sports in the community as a missionary tool and describing sport as a human activity of great value, with the Catholic Church working in the world of sport to bring the joy of the Gospel and the inclusive and unconditional love of God for all human beings.
