Shivalaya Arts is a classical style private art school founded in 2008 in Fremont, California by Poonam Gupta. Its art classes give an opportunity to study fundamentals in classical drawing, painting, and picture composition through what is described as “academic training with systematic progression.” All the art mediums, including color pencils, crayons, markers, graphite, charcoal, soft pastels, oil pastels, acrylic, water, and oil paints, are taught to students step by step, and students must complete each task to the instructor’s satisfaction before progressing to the next.

As students acquire each skill with strong emphasis placed on accurate observation and construction of proportion of shape, tonal value, and color, new and more challenging projects are assigned. Exhibitions are conducted in Irvington Library and Fremont Main Library featuring each student’s best works. Having students from multiple districts such as Warm Springs, Niles, Ardenwood, and Irvington, Shivalaya Arts has grown in influence around the Bay Area, reaching over 1100 students.

After teaching art classes for 10 years in India and raising two kids, Poonam Gupta started Shivalaya Arts in 2008 to refuel her passion in art and inspire others in her community. Having done a lot of vocational courses in drawing and painting in the past, she has taught 1100+ students a variety of painting and drawing techniques throughout her career and has managed various paint parties at private and corporate events. Her art institution has attracted students over the last 15 years, and her talents and unique teaching style have attracted students from all around the Bay Area.

Parent feedback describes Ms. Poonam as patient, organized, and punctual, with classes that start on time and without last-minute changes. Several parents report that their children look forward to the classes each week, including during online Zoom sessions, and mention noticing improvement in their children’s art skills over time. Testimonials also note that she gives personal attention to each child, focuses on basics in a way students can understand, and teaches step by step with repeated practice until students get it correct.
