About
Simon Academics offers writing classes, English classes, and language arts instruction, along with writing tutoring and reading tutoring. The program also provides reading help for struggling young readers, one-on-one high school math tutoring, SAT prep, college application coaching, and college counseling. Instruction is offered in small groups with a set curriculum, and pacing and focus depend on student needs rather than worksheets or fixed schedules.
• Ages: 5–18 years old
Simon Academics states that its mission is to provide premium tutoring services designed to deliver real academic progress. The program is known for writing classes in Fremont and has taught thousands of students. Former students have attended Harvard, Berkeley, Princeton, MIT, CalTech, and many other top schools.
The staff includes Mr. Simon, the owner and founder of Simon Academics; Mr. Zybul (Mr. Z); Mrs. Osborne; Mr. Liang; and Ms. Irby. Mr. Simon has a BA in Philosophy from UC Berkeley and a teaching credential from CSU Hayward. Mr. Zybul has a BA in English from UC Irvine and a high school English teaching credential from Chapman University. Mrs. Osborne holds a California Teaching Credential from Notre Dame de Namur and a BA in Psychology from UC Santa Cruz. Mr. Liang earned his BS in Biochemistry and teaching credential from UCLA and is earning his Masters of Education from UCLA. Ms. Irby has a BA in English Education, an MA in Education Administration, and a credential in Educational Administration and Supervision from the University of Southern Mississippi.
Simon Academics started in San Ramon in 2003 and reports 24+ years of teaching experience. Mr. Simon began teaching in 2003, and Mr. Zybul began teaching in 2005. Mrs. Osborne has been teaching and tutoring in the Bay Area since 1991 and editing academic books and manuscripts since 1987. One former Simon Academics student, Mr. Liang, is now part of the staff.
The program notes that expert instructors work with K–12 students on grammar, spelling, punctuation, organization, vocabulary, and critical thinking. Classes are described as having high standards and pushing students harder than they are used to, and GATE students find the classes challenging. The program states that there is always a next step, with increasing difficulty as students advance. It also states that regular education students learn to perform like never before, and that students with learning disabilities receive instruction in small, comprehensible steps, with the idea that as the incomprehensible becomes comprehensible, confidence grows and little steps yield big gains over time.
In terms of community ties, Mrs. Osborne has lived in Fremont with her husband for the past 33 years. Mr. Simon lives in Castro Valley with his wife, who teaches at Parkmont in Fremont, and their two children.
