About

iCAN Junior Triathlon Club focuses on training for the sport of triathlon. Athletes take part in sport specific training drills for swimming, cycling, and running. Training takes place in a team environment where athletes may be grouped in swimming lanes and into groups for running and cycling based on skill level, ability, and developmental age.

• Ages: 7–18 years old

The beginning of what would become the iCAN Junior Triathlon Club started in 2005. The program’s mission is “Teaching Youth Fundamental Life Principles Through the Sport of Triathlon.” Training programs are developed based on each athlete’s chronological and developmental age, demonstrated skill level, perceived training level, abilities, and goals, and coaches work with athletes both collectively and individually. Athletes are grouped by skill level, ability, and developmental age rather than strictly by age, and it is not unusual to see a swimming lane with youth of different ages if they are equally skilled. Athletes complete workouts that are attainable and give them a sense of personal accomplishment, and coaches pay very close attention to what motivates each athlete individually and use this to the athlete’s advantage. Coaches focus on skills and the fundamentals of training, equipment, and nutrition, and triathlons are selected that fit individual triathletes or each training session so each athlete can participate and experience race day.

The club describes itself as a fun, friendly, and exciting community of youth between the ages of 7 and 19, with different levels of training programs intended to develop confident triathletes and promote healthy lifestyles. It uses the triathlon as a platform to empower youth through the encouragement of an “I CAN” attitude coupled with confidence, patience, and determination, and it promotes “iCAN” core life principles of confidence, patience, and determination while developing goal setting skills to foster academic growth, increase leadership, and promote adherence to a healthier lifestyle. Todd Waldner is the Director and Lead Coach. iCAN Junior Triathlon Club is a 501c.3 Community Benefit Organization and relies upon charitable donations, corporate sponsorship, and grants to support and advance its Mission and Vision.
