About

Los Niños de Aztlan Dance Studio offers folkloric dance and other dance instruction that includes public performances and academic presentation. Students rehearse and perform dances that reflect different cultural regions in Mexico through folkloric dance, music, and attire. The studio holds two annual recitals that showcase this work.

• Ages: 3–18 years old
• Schedule: One recital is scheduled in December and the other is scheduled in mid June.

Los Niños de Aztlan was established in 1978 and has existed for 46 years, with 47 years of folklorico. It was established to promote cultural awareness and to provide a historical perspective of the different cultural regions in Mexico through folkloric dance, music, and attire. Many children began at the age of 3 and continued until graduating from high school, and there are many second-generation students whose parents also danced with Los Niños de Aztlan. There are and have been instructors who danced with Los Niños as children and continued in the program through high school.

The leadership team includes Professor Ernesto Martinez, founder of Los Niños de Aztlan, and instructor trainers Elena Ybarra-Murphy and Richard Delgado. Many instructors who teach or have taught for Los Niños de Aztlan were trained by Professor Ernesto Martinez and also danced with Los Danzantes de Aztlan while attending California State University Fresno. The next generation of instructors have been trained by Elena Ybarra-Murphy and Richard Delgado, as well as participating in their high school group, college group, and various conferences to define their skill.

The mission of Los Niños de Aztlan is to continue the tradition of the Mexican culture through its authentic music, costumes, and dance, and to provide each student with skills and self-assurance not only in public performances, but also in the academic presentation. Los Niños de Aztlan has become a feeder program for colleges and universities in California. Many alumni have continued dancing for universities such as CSU Fresno, UC Merced, Stanford, and many other universities and colleges, and many former students have formed groups at the schools where they now teach.

A college scholarship fund was established in 2015 for students beginning their college career. A portion of the scholarship is given to every Los Niños de Aztlan high school senior who has been accepted to a university, college, or trade school.

Professor Ernesto Martinez was recognized as the father of Mexican folkloric dance in the San Joaquin Valley. Los Danzantes de Aztlan at California State University Fresno was the first Mexican folkloric dance group to be recognized by the University system. Los Niños de Aztlan Dance Studio is a recipient of the 2024 Expanded Access to Arts and Culture Organizational Support grant.
