The Art Room offers process-driven art classes where students work in drawing, ceramics, painting, mixed media, collage, comics and cartooning, clay hand-building, and throwing on the potter’s wheel. K–3rd grade classes include time for free choice art and guided art lessons in drawing, painting, and clay hand-building, while 4th–6th grade students choose their own subject matter and medium with individualized instruction and only 3–4 whole-group lessons per 12-week session. Students in 7th grade and above can build their own curriculum with guidance, including throwing on the potter’s wheel and portfolio building for magnet high schools or colleges, and 3rd–6th graders in the Comics and Cartooning class create their own comics and contribute to a class Anthology Comic that they take home.

The Art Room describes itself as a small art and ceramics studio and a mixed-media studio offering camps and art sessions in a variety of media, including ceramics, watercolors, acrylic, and pastels. It has a Main Studio and an additional next-door space called The Annex, also referred to as Studio B and the Art Room Annex. Process-driven classes run over 12 weeks and are described as helping K–12 artists build skills, confidence, and creativity, and the Comics and Cartooning class culminates in a book reveal where students print, bind, and sign each other’s anthology comics. The studio states that exposure to all forms of art and an understanding of the process helps kids learn how to be their own type of maker, and that it is a space for kids to learn social norms and community while allowing room for play and room to grow. The space can also be rented for private parties, including adult and holiday parties, and a newsletter subscription offers $20 off a first class session or camp. The studio will not accept children who are 3 years old and will accept children once they are enrolled in Kindergarten, and for cancellations it can credit the value of classes for up to one year or cancel completely for a $100 fee, with cancellations within 14 days of the class start date credited only, minus a $100 fee.
The Art Room has been in existence for over 38 years, beginning as Lindsay Epstein’s Children’s Art Classes and expanding into The Art Room in Glendale, CA. Instructors include Blake Lemons, who has been working in sequential art for over 20 years as a story artist, animation director, and creative producer for Netflix, DreamWorks, Nickelodeon, and Disney and was a contributing artist and editor-in-chief of Pratt Institute’s comic anthology “Static Fish.” TK Kuk is a graduate of Art Center College of Design with a BFA in Fine Art and a focus in painting and illustration, has nine years at the studio, and teaches weekly art classes and camps for K–12. Jenna Macho graduated from Santa Clara University with a BA in Education and Studio Art, received a Masters and credential in Literacy Education at LMU, is a fully credentialed teacher, has worked for and with the studio for over 25 years, and heads programming for The Art Room in Schools. Monica Virgen has been teaching art to TK–8th grade students for 13 years, has a visual communications degree from the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising (FIDM), has experience in schools, and has run the visual arts department, after school programming, and camps with Boys and Girls Club, and she helps with new public school programming for The Art Room.
