About
South Coast Karate offers martial arts classes that include self-defense skills. The program describes martial arts as a “Way of Life” and offers all levels of classes for both children and adults.
• Ages: 3–18 years old
• Schedule: Classes are held Mondays and Thursdays
South Coast Karate teaches both kids and adults to explore their full potential with martial arts classes, developing mental focus, physical conditioning, and self-defense skills in a safe environment that promotes mutual respect and encourages each individual to do their best. The program offers the Tiny Tigers program for children 3–6 years old and the KID POWER program for kids 5–13 years of age. South Coast Karate offers classes in Santa Barbara, Montecito, Goleta, Buellton, and Lompoc.
Brian Jordan is the Chief Instructor and Founder of South Coast Karate. He started his formal training in South Berwick, Maine with a group of Okinawan Goju-Ryu practitioners led by Sensei Dan Greenlaw and later trained under Shihan Russ Olson. Austin Elovitz is the Lead Instructor. Chris Martin is the highest ranking student in the school with a second degree black belt and has 23+ years of training under Sensei Brian Jordan since 1991.
Sensei Brian Jordan started his formal training 35+ years ago and founded South Coast Karate after he arrived in Santa Barbara 10 years later, with a specialization in the instruction of children. In 2004 he developed the Tiny Tigers program.
South Coast Karate has been recognized for outstanding effort and participation in the community by groups including KEYT’s “Children First,” the Independent, Santa Barbara Downtown Organization, Los Padres National Forest Service, Santa Barbara Multiple Sclerosis Society, Children’s Creative Project, Goleta Chamber of Commerce, National Make a Difference Day, and the City of Santa Barbara. South Coast Karate’s “Kid Power” can be found at many local elementary schools.
The program has been recognized by KEYT’s “Children First,” and is a winner of the Santa Barbara Independent’s “Best Martial Arts Studio” four years in a row. It has also been recognized by the Santa Barbara Downtown Organization as “Winner of Most Spirited Entry” five years and “Best Performance” one year.
Parents say, “Your dedication to all those kids is tremendous. You’re always so encouraging to them. You touch many lives with your compassionate heart and it’s very evident in each class you teach.” Teachers say, “You were phenomenal! Thanks, my students are still talking about you and the strategies they learned.”
