About

The ALAS Music Program includes cultural arts activities such as Ballet Folklórico and Mariachi. The program also includes counseling, group circles, art therapy, and music therapy as part of its offerings.

ALAS has been active since 2011 with a dual focus on immediate needs and long-term transformation. The program is part of ALAS, which is led by Dr. Belinda Hernandez Arriaga, Ed.D, L.C.S.W., Founder and Executive Director. ALAS states that it is dedicated to working for social wellness through multicultural practices, mental health care, individualized and collective support related to education, immigration processes, and work, and advocating for the wellbeing of the whole community. ALAS is described as the first Latino-driven nonprofit on the North Coast and the first farmworker-driven nonprofit on the North Coast. ALAS is a nationally recognized, award-winning nonprofit and has been named Non-Profit of the Year by the State of California. ALAS has partnerships with Stanford University and the University of San Francisco and gathers thousands each year for Día de Los Muertos, holiday posadas, and pumpkin festivals. ALAS helped secure and design 555 Kelly, the Coastside’s first affordable housing project for farmworker elders, and brings health resources directly to the fields through its Equity Bus while advocating for dignified housing, educational equity, and economic opportunity. The ALAS Music Program is part of ALAS cultural arts programs that use culture, art, and music as healing practices, and it is featured in the Chords of Hope short film campaign highlighting the farmworker community and supporting the music program.
