• Ages: 5–11 years old
Founded in 2006 as Upgrade Children's Center by Jon and Heather Lowings, Coastal Adventures has served thousands of children who have built friendships, explored the Coastside, built confidence and strength, and developed a lifelong respect for nature through the program. Coastal Adventures After School Program is an outdoor adventure-based after school care program for children in grades K–5th that offers daily outdoor adventures, arts, crafts, and active games, and encourages children to explore the wonders of the coast side and peninsula and develop respect for nature and a healthy outdoor lifestyle.
Program Director Jon Lowings studied Recreational Administration at Cal Poly University in San Luis Obispo, ran the Junior Rangers Program, worked for local state parks during the summer, directed the Kings Mountain Children’s Center for 10 years, and later returned to school to attain his teaching credentials. Jon grew up on the Coastside, graduated from Half Moon Bay High School, has continued to live on the coast, and continues to inspire and educate children in Earth stewardship, coach baseball, and help in classrooms. Jon and his wife Michele have two children, Sam and Claire. The program’s mission states that kids need to be kids, get messy, be adventurous, and have a good time, and that through play and exploration it promotes a love of learning and a greater appreciation of nature, with authentic learning taking place when children investigate and interact with the world around them.
