About
Main Street Scholars offers a college-model high school built on a traditional college structure, along with individual programs that use a rigorous curriculum while allowing students to learn and develop in their own ways. Students have a voice in the number of classes they take each semester and can include high-interest classes at every step. Classes use a student-focused approach with cooperative learning, interaction, and collaboration, supported by mentor teachers and one-to-one support, with a smaller student body of about 10–15 students and a student-to-teacher ratio of 1:1 to 1:3.
• Schedule: School hours are generally Monday–Friday 9 am–5 pm, with coaching hours Monday–Friday 9 am–7 pm.
For grades 10–12, Main Street Scholars offers concurrent enrollment. The program uses shorter grading periods of five weeks, three times per semester, and routine days for junior high from 9 am–3 pm. The mission of Main Street Scholars is to provide a rigorous curriculum while allowing each student to learn and develop at his or her individual pace, working together with parents, students, and instructors so each child finds and develops academic curiosity and a confident, lifelong love of learning.
Main Street Scholars is fully accredited, WASC certified through June 2028, and A-G approved by UC and CSU. The leadership team includes Head of School Dawn McGee and Executive Director and Founder Jamie Weintraub. The school opened in fall 2014, and seven years later had provided education and educational support to more than 200 families in its school and coaching center. Main Street Scholars works alongside public and private schools to support students and families from the coastside and beyond.
One parent shared that through the support of Jamie and Main Street Scholars, their daughter, who had disengaged with remote schooling during the pandemic, began to enjoy learning again and felt inspired and able to reach her full potential, calling it “education at its finest” and “a gem in this community.” Another parent noted that Main Street Scholars treats the kids as individuals and not just a statistic of improved test scores.
