• Ages: 5–11 years old
Founded in 2006 as Upgrade Children's Center by Jon and Heather Lowings, Coastal Adventures has focused on children, nature, adventure, learning, and fun since its inception. The Program Director, Jon Lowings, studied Recreational Administration at Cal Poly University in San Luis Obispo. Jon has also worked for local state parks during the summer, inspiring and educating children in Earth stewardship. The program’s mission states that children get messy, are adventurous, and have a good time, and that through play and exploration it promotes a love of learning and a greater appreciation of nature, with authentic learning taking place as children investigate and interact with the world around them. Coastal Adventures After School Program is described as an outdoor adventure-based after school care program for children in grades K–5th, and its summer camp offers “Summer + Learning + Outdoor Adventures” with a new adventure each day. The program states that it wants children to explore the wonders of the coast side and peninsula, develop respect for nature and a healthy outdoor lifestyle, and gain confidence that will follow them into adulthood, and that thousands of children have built friendships, explored the Coastside, built confidence and strength, and developed a lifelong respect for nature through its programs.
