Nueva Summer is led by Nueva faculty and visiting educators, and the camp program is described as fun, multidisciplinary, and designed for high-ability learners. The program incorporates Nueva’s teaching practices developed through more than 50 years of experience and is interdisciplinary, project- and inquiry-based, student-centered, and grounded by Nueva principles. Lunch is provided for campers in the Lower School program, and several supervised and programmed recess breaks are built into the day.
Nueva is an independent PreK–12 school for gifted learners in the San Francisco Bay Area, guided by a mission to inspire lifelong learning and empower students to make choices that benefit the world. The school emphasizes a “learn by doing, learn by caring” ethos and a project-based approach with opportunities for deep inquiry and hands-on exploration, and Nueva Summer is described as designed to spark student creativity and inspire learners from across the region. International students are welcome to register, but the camp is not equipped to support students without English fluency.
Financial awards are available for families who qualify, and qualifying non-Nueva families may receive financial assistance for up to two weeks of camp per camper, with additional weeks available at full cost. Nueva families automatically receive the same financial awards they receive during the school year and do not need to submit additional documentation. To register a new (non-Nueva) Lower or Middle School camper, families must upload either recent standardized test scores or a recent school report card and a current teacher recommendation, and to apply for financial assistance they must upload the first two pages of their 2025 federal tax return.
Nueva’s teaching practices have been developed over more than 50 years since the school’s founding in 1967. The Nueva School is jointly accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) and the California Association of Independent Schools (CAIS), and is a member of organizations including the National Association of Independent Schools (NAIS), the National Association for Gifted Children (NAGC), the Association of Independent Schools for Gifted Students (AISGS), and others, and is a founding member of AISGS. The Nueva School admits students of any race, color, religion, gender, sexual orientation, or national or ethnic origin and does not discriminate on the basis of these factors.
The Nueva Parents Association promotes, shares, and transmits the “Learn by doing, learn by caring” culture to each new generation of Nueva families. The school’s leadership team includes Lee Fertig (Head of School), Terry Lee (Associate Head of School), Gavin Bradley (Director of College Counseling), Brett Dyer (Director of Finance and Administration), Taryn Grogan (Director of Enrollment and Strategic Engagement), Melanie León (Director of Admissions, PreK–12), Lyla Max (Director of Development), Lauren Pool (Director of Teaching and Learning), Liza Raynal (Upper School Division Head), Shawn Taylor (Director of Equity and Inclusion), Megan Terra (Lower School Division Head), Karen Tiegel (Middle School Division Head), and Rachael Uriarte (Director of Communications).
