About

AMP Summer Camp focuses on hands-on music activities including music production, songwriting, DJing, and small group performance in duos and trios. Campers take part in workshops, individual instruction, rehearsals, and live performances, and they receive music business and industry insights. The program also includes learning how to run and manage the AMP Oasis Stage, collaborating with local artists and mentors, auditioning for a band, rehearsing and preparing for performance opportunities, and performing in a Final Showcase that can feature classic (pre-1990s), modern (post-1990s), original, and improvised pieces.

• Ages: 10–18 years old
• Schedule: Two-week main camp with an additional one-week Band Week by audition
• Price: Tuition 2-week Summer Camp: $800. Additional Band Week (Week 3): $200.

AMP Summer Camp runs as a high-energy, hands-on music performance day camp with two weeks of immersive music training and an optional third “Band Week” for students who audition. Space is limited, and auditions are required, with evaluation recommendations that include classic, modern, original, or improvised pieces. AMP provides lunch daily, and students with special dietary needs may bring their own meals. An evaluation is required for new AMP Camp students and is held live in person in Downtown Indio at the studio, while returning students do not need an evaluation unless they are auditioning on a new instrument.

The Academy of Musical Performance (AMP) is a contemporary music education program whose stated goal is to enrich the lives of young musicians in the Coachella Valley through creativity, communication, and collaboration in a rock band style educational setting. AMP offers multiple forward-thinking music programs to students between ages 8–18, including Rock Band programs that teach youth how to play in a band and perform in the community, a Private Lesson program for beginners-to-advanced musicians, preAMP group ukulele lessons for children, and an Instrument Loan program. AMP Summer, Spring, and Fall programs continue rock band education throughout the school year, and AMP has created eight unique programs and curriculums since 2015.

In 2015, AMP began as an idea by Coachella Valley Community Trust board member Roman Whittaker, and the inaugural AMP Summer Camp took place that same year. The AMP Board of Directors was established in late 2017 when AMP became its own non-profit 501(c)(3) organization. The leadership team includes Founder & Secretary Kate Spates, President Stephanie Greene, Vice President Greg Vincent, Treasurer Ben Vasquez, and Board Members Skip Paige and Wendy Hope-Heckmann. AMP is known for its summer program, AMP Summer Camp, and Goldenvoice committed to three years of seed funding to launch the program.

AMP is described as a dynamic multi-level contemporary music education program that enriches the lives of young musicians in the Coachella Valley, with Rock Band programs that facilitate performances throughout the community and keep kids engaged in community-based activities. AMP Summer, Spring, and Fall are open to students ages 11–18 from desert communities including Palm Springs, Cathedral City, Desert Hot Springs, Rancho Mirage, Palm Desert, Indian Wells, La Quinta, Bermuda Dunes, Indio, Coachella, and Thermal. AMP has helped foster a respectful and responsible community of musical youth in the Coachella Valley, and some AMP students have kept their talents in the community, creating open and accepting music scenes for their extended networks.
