Camp Scherman Summer Sleepaway Camp is part of Girl Scouts of Orange County, which is headquartered in Irvine, California. Camp Scherman notes “50+ Years of Magic” and reports that 75% of campers return every year, with 15,000 Girl Scouts served. The camp uses a flexible, membership-style pricing system with three tiers so families can choose the option that best fits their needs, and all pricing tier selections are confidential and do not affect the camp experience. GSOC Girl Scouts may select Tier 1, a subsidized rate, or Tier 3, which reflects the true cost of operating summer sleepaway camp, while visiting Girl Scouts from other councils may choose Tier 2, a subsidized rate for non-GSOC members, or Tier 3. Financial aid “camperships” are awarded to GSOC youth campers with a current Girl Scout membership on the basis of financial need only and are available for Camp Scherman summer sleepaway camps, Camp Scherman weekend camps, and GSOC day camps, and camperships must be submitted no less than 6 weeks before the camp start date.
Registration for Camp Scherman Summer Sleepaway Camp is ongoing throughout the spring and early summer. Sessions close 2 weeks before the camp session begins or when they reach full capacity, whichever comes first, and a waitlist is maintained for full sessions, with families contacted if a spot becomes available. All cancellation requests must be submitted at least 4 weeks before camp in writing to [email protected]. Cancellations more than 4 weeks before camp receive a full refund minus the $75 deposit per camper, and cancellations less than 4 weeks before camp receive no refund except for medical reasons approved by Girl Scouts of Orange County. The mission statement connected with the camp is that Girl Scouting builds girls of courage, confidence, and character, who make the world a better place.
One camper shared, “I love Camp Scherman because it has taught me to be brave, try new things, laugh the hardest, and every day feels like a new adventure.” Another camper said, “I just LOVE this camp! The counselors are fun and nice and make you feel very safe. The activities are awesome! I like everything about this camp.” A third camper described it by saying, “Camp Scherman is an amazing exploration, and for the short time you’re there, you get to experience so much!”
