About
La Mesa United Methodist Children's Center & Youth Programs includes play-based learning, art, music, movement, songs, storytelling, group play, and cooperative play. The program also offers homework and school project assistance, cooking activities, field trips, and yoga.
• Ages: 1–12 years old
• Schedule: Vacation Bible School “Very Best Summer” camp runs July 27–31, Monday through Friday, 9am–12pm; yoga is offered on Mondays at 4pm
La Mesa United Methodist Children's Center & Youth Programs offers a toddler program for children 18 months to 2 years, a preschool and TK program for children 2 to 5 years, and a school-age program for children 5 to 11 years. The school-age program is organized around daily themes throughout the year and includes before and after school care for elementary-age children. The program provides after school care for children 5 to 11 years who attend Lemon Avenue Elementary, with transportation provided by a licensed Youth Bus, and offers full-day care camps during elementary school breaks for children from surrounding elementary schools.
The program began in 1955 as a nursery school organized and staffed by members of LM1. Pastor Christian DeMent leads the program’s Children’s Chapel in the sanctuary once a month for each age group at the Children's Center. A special Sensory Sunday School is offered on the first and third Sundays of the month from 9:30–10:30am for children with disabilities, led by a Special Education specialist. Nursery care is provided for toddlers through pre-K during the entire Sunday worship service, and worship is available onsite in the sanctuary at 9:30am with a livestream at the same time on the program’s YouTube channel or Facebook page.
The program states that it believes love, acceptance, and equitable guidance are cornerstones for successful learning and that it works with each child and family based on that child’s needs. It states that its goal is to foster each child’s natural curiosity and grow it into a lifelong love of learning. The school uses the Heggerty Phonemic Awareness Curriculum.
