About
St. Andrew's Episcopal Day School offers a theme-based curriculum rooted in play, exploration, and faith that includes art, music, movement, language, math, science, outdoor play, dramatic play, Bible study, and sensory learning. The program also uses the BrightWheel platform for communication, photo sharing, and tuition payments between the school and families.
• Ages: 0–5 years old
• Schedule: Business hours Monday–Friday, 7:30am–5:30pm, with the exclusion of holidays
Since 1947, St. Andrew's Episcopal Day School has served the community with a stated commitment to early childhood education and has evolved over time to meet changing needs. The school’s mission is to provide a nurturing, developmentally appropriate Christian environment for children as they become independent, lifelong learners. As part of the Episcopal Diocese of San Diego, the program includes a nursery for infants as young as 6 weeks and a preschool for children ages 2 to 5, with an infant room that has the stated goal of feeling like an extension of the home. Staff members state that they work to keep feeding, napping, and daily routines consistent with each child’s home environment and that they view meeting emotional, social, and developmental needs as just as important as meeting physical needs.
The program describes a comprehensive safety plan that includes emergency backpacks in each room with disaster plans, first aid kits, and essential emergency supplies, along with an extensive evacuation plan that uses key nearby locations. The campus is gated with a keypad entry and has security cameras outside the entries and parking lots, and staff participate in safety training, including CPR and first aid, at least twice per year. St. Andrew's Episcopal Day School holds license numbers 370800551 and 376600304 and works closely with the La Mesa Fire and Police Departments to keep plans up to date.
Parent communication includes monthly newsletters, the BrightWheel app, an open-door policy in the office, parent-teacher meetings upon request, and a pre-K assessment two times a year. Families take part in special events such as an Easter celebration, a Christmas Pageant, and an End-of-the-Year BBQ and Art Show, and parents also serve on the school board. The school accepts tuition subsidies from MCCYN, CDA, and YMCA and is open to partnering with other subsidy programs, and it offers a 10% discount for siblings, active military members, and St. Andrew’s Parish parishioners. The leadership team includes Julie S. as Director and Julie M. as Business Manager.
One family reports that both of their boys attended St. Andrew’s from infancy, starting at 4 months and 8 months old, and that they relied on staff for advice on developmental stages such as starting solid foods, sleep and nap struggles, and potty training, and that they will miss the school community as their youngest moves on to kindergarten.
