The program takes place in a Lafayette Academy learning center with popcorn available to help students relax, as well as in online formats that are described as feeling similar to in-center tutoring.

• Ages: 5–18 years old

Lafayette Academy has focused on local schools in Lamorinda and Danville since 2004. The program focuses on local curriculum wherever tutoring takes place and identifies ways to help students understand challenging concepts, with the stated goal of preparing students to ace their tests and earn higher grades. Shadow Classes and Final Exam Crams are school-specific and focus on local high school classes, and the program uses Big Ideas Math textbooks, including exact problems in Algebra 1, Algebra 2, and Geometry.

Test prep classes for the SAT and ACT are organized by ability level, and ACT and SAT students are organized based on initial assessment scores for differentiated instruction. Test prep students are provided with 3 practice tests, followed by 3 hours of one-on-one tutoring, and their weekly homework is monitored with intervention when necessary. One-on-one private tutoring includes a learning styles assessment, and multiple worksheets are available for a given topic to address different learning styles.

Tutors share information on Slack, including effective methods to teach challenging concepts, and “tutor leaders” for popular subjects track those subjects at various schools. Private Slack channels allow tutor leaders to post relevant information and ways to explain complex topics, and “super tutors” post insights about specific teachers and upcoming tests. The program uses curriculum worksheets and videos compiled from extensive experiences with local students and maintains an internal curriculum database that is described as unmatched by other tutoring companies.

Lafayette Academy supports the Lamorinda community, including many schools, LPIE, and the Chamber of Commerce. The organization reports having helped over 35,000 K–12 students, and most students are described as earning grades that are one or two letters higher than they would without Lafayette Academy. The program offers flexible scheduling in learning centers or online, and its online tutoring is described as “The Best Online Tutoring. Period.” with local online tutors who are familiar with the schools they serve.

In a Spring 2022 online survey, online families reported being happy with online tutoring, and none wanted to switch to in-person sessions. Survey comments included that online tutoring was “going great and very convenient,” that a family was “very pleased with tutoring provided by A.B.,” and that online tutoring was “just as helpful as in-person tutoring.” One parent from Acalanes reported that a student’s SAT scores improved enough that state school entrance or placement exams were not required, and another student from Carondelet reported SAT scores of 690 in Critical Reading, 740 in Math, and 800 in Writing, for a total of 2230. Other parents from De La Salle and Monte Vista described the service as something they could count on for their sons, noted that a physics tutor was “excellent,” and stated that starting SAT prep in the summer before junior year was appreciated and that the overall experience was “very fruitful and worthwhile.”
