Viva el Español is a Spanish Language and Culture Center serving children and adults in the San Francisco Bay Area, in the East Bay and Marin. It teaches Spanish to young “amigos” from toddlers through grade 8 as before and after school enrichment programs, as well as during the school day, and also offers online classes for all ages and private tutoring. Six proficiency levels are offered for elementary school students, and three different levels are offered for middle school classes, which follow the Realidades textbook series. The Parent & Me option is for a parent and child ages 2–3 to learn Spanish side by side, and teachers will tailor a lesson plan specific to each child’s needs, using experience with all textbooks that local schools use. Viva el Español organizes field trips throughout the year so that students can practice their Spanish in real situations, and camps are offered to give children a unique opportunity to learn or improve their Spanish language skills.
Instruction is provided by native Spanish speakers who are Spanish speakers with a love for teaching children and who are professionals in their fields, with skills as artists, dancers, musicians, and educational specialists. The program assesses student progress on a regular basis, and the first class is free. Viva el Español states that it believes learning a foreign language in the preschool and elementary years is an essential part of a child’s education and development, aims to build enthusiasm for language learning through early success that is transferable to all languages, promotes learning of Spanish at a prime language learning time, and defines specific comprehension, speaking, reading, and writing skills in Spanish at each curriculum level. It also states goals to develop a solid base of Spanish pronunciation, provide a foundation for continued language study in middle and high school, enhance knowledge of world cultures, increase global awareness, and have fun while doing this. Viva el Español is a non-profit Spanish Language and Culture Center and notes “Viva el Español Awards” among its credentials.
