The Lake County Arts Council was founded in 1981. Its stated purpose is to encourage and develop the arts and cultural activities in Lake County by coordinating, developing, sponsoring, and providing assistance in artistic and cultural endeavors. The Council is a not-for-profit volunteer organization that is open to all individuals and describes its practices and policies as culturally diverse. As of March 8, 2023, the Board of Directors has approved and dedicated three seats on the Board for cultural bearers. The IDEA (Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, and Accessibility) Committee works to continually evolve and grow the Lake County Arts Council in the spirit of inclusion. Volunteers are described by the organization as the lifeblood of its work. The Lake County Arts Council is a member of the California Arts Council, which is the officially recognized art organization to the State and Local Partnership Program. The organization is involved in community efforts that include a partnership with the Lake County Office of Education to provide a series of Arts Integration Trainings, and it is connected with Poetry Out Loud, a national program that is a partnership of the National Endowment for the Arts, the Poetry Foundation, and state and jurisdictional arts agencies.
