About
The WRD Education Program includes activities such as the ARC Field Trip Program, Annual Student Art Calendar Contest, Annual Groundwater Festival, in-classroom visits, science nights, career fairs, health fairs, Eco Gardener Classes, the ARC 360 Virtual Tour, WRD Online Activities, Project WET (Water Education for Teachers) Workshops, the Eco Gardener Program, and Water Education Tours. The program offers interactive student activities that focus on topics such as the importance of groundwater, water treatment, and resource conservation. K–12th grade classes are invited to participate in a facilitated field trip at the Albert Robles Center, where the ARC field trip immerses students in a dynamic and interactive environment.
• Ages: 5–18 years old
The ARC program builds on visitors’ prior knowledge and daily connection to the water cycle with specific attention to groundwater and recycled water. During ARC activities, students are challenged to analyze the information presented and use critical thinking skills to propose conservation and engineering solutions to the problems or issues presented. ARC also incorporates career development in which students and teachers gain exposure to, and exploration of, water careers with varying levels of educational requirements.
Through the Annual Student Art Calendar Contest, WRD receives hundreds of submissions each year and selects 23 winners, including 1 grand prize winner. The winners have their artwork published in the WRD Water Awareness Calendar, and the grand prize winner’s artwork appears on the cover. Winners receive certificates of recognition, printed copies of the calendar, and other prizes, and all participants receive a certificate of participation and a copy of the calendar that are sent to their schools. The WRD Water Awareness Calendar shares information about the importance of water and the role people can play in water conservation every day by changing their habits at home and at school.
WRD offers a Water Education Teacher Grant for environmental education in classrooms in support of the Student Art Contest. Teachers with the most participation in the Student Art Contest receive a small grant to spend on water education materials, and these grants are provided by Art Contest sponsors. WRD Online Activities can be completed for an opportunity to receive a WRD Water Nerd Certificate and water conservation prizes.
WRD offers free tours of its water education learning center. The Water Replenishment District’s Education Program states that it offers an array of programs featuring interactive student activities on groundwater, water treatment, and resource conservation. WRD is the largest groundwater agency by population in the state of California, managing and protecting local groundwater resources for four million residents in a 420-square-mile region of southern Los Angeles County. WRD states that it loves to share its passion for water and water education with teachers and students of all ages.
The leadership contacts for the program include Monica Sijder for information regarding the Education Program and Angie Mancillas for press inquiries. WRD considers all applicants for all positions regardless of race, color, religion, creed, gender, national origin, age, disability, marital or veteran status, orientation, or any other legally protected status and is an Equal Opportunity Employer. WRD is committed to transparency to promote fiscal accountability.
