About
Camp Winnarainbow offers circus and performing arts classes where campers can swing on the trapeze, walk on stilts, write a song, and take part in stage performances and talent shows. Campers can also swim in Lake Veronica and join evening activities such as fire circles and dance parties. The program hosts young people as they learn performing arts skills like trapeze, juggling, clowning, unicycling, stilt walking, and songwriting.
• Ages: 7–14 years old
• Schedule: One and two week sessions throughout the summer
Camp Winnarainbow is a fully ACA accredited circus and performing arts summer camp that offers one and two week sessions throughout the summer, each ending in an Open House or Big Show where families have the opportunity to experience the camp alongside the campers. The camp also offers a Teen Leadership Program for 15–17 year old leaders and a Friends & Family Camp. For 50 years, kids, teens and adults have attended Camp Winnarainbow, which was founded in 1975 by Wavy Gravy and Jahanara Romney. The camp’s staff and leadership have brought in trauma informed care practices, non-violent communication, and restorative justice, and CWR’s talented staff teaches timing, balance, and “Survival in the 21st century, or, how to duck with a sense of humor, and a dollop of compassion.” Over the last four decades, Camp Winnarainbow has grown to become a fully ACA accredited, highly sought after circus and performing arts summer camp. Camp Winnarainbow’s scholarship program, The Grace & Joy Scholarship Fund, makes camp accessible to families of all means and is described as a haven for economically disadvantaged kids and kids of rockstars alike. The camp’s mission states that it creates a joyful environment where children from all backgrounds develop community, self-confidence, and artistry through circus and performing arts, and that it aims to be a training ground to nurture leaders for a peaceful, harmonious, and sustainable future. Founder Wavy Gravy describes the community by saying, “Kids from every walk of life come together and make a kind of a universal whole at Camp. Everybody gets something from each other and we end up being a community together and filled with love. And wonder.”
