The City of Lincoln states that organized sports and camps assist in building self esteem, teamwork and development of the body and mind, and that its goal is to provide high quality programs for young people of all backgrounds in a safe and healthy environment. Youth sports programs rely on volunteer coaches, and volunteering is described as a way to make a difference in the community. Lincoln youth sports programs enable registrations through TeamSideline, and families without an account can create one for free. Volunteers receive a program discount and have the ability to choose practice times, practice days and players, with most volunteer roles requiring an 8 to 10 week commitment. The City of Lincoln offers scholarships for up to 50% of registration fees for programs to families in need, with an age cutoff of 18 years old for scholarship eligibility. Scholarship funds are made available through the Mayor's Cup Scholarship Fund, which is funded through proceeds from the annual Mayor's Cup Golf Tournament.
