About
CAMP GO BeYOND is a summer camp for kids diagnosed with Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD), including Crohn's Disease and Ulcerative Colitis. Camper medications are stored in a Med Shed and are dispensed by on-site nurses according to each camper’s specifically prescribed schedule.
• Ages: 7–17 years old
• Schedule: One-week session from July 1–7, 2026
• Price: Camp has been free for all attendees since its inception.
CAMP GO BeYOND was created in 2001 by Dr. Mel Heyman, Chief of Pediatric Gastroenterology at UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital in San Francisco, originally under the name Camp Gut Busters. The camp is staffed by physicians and nurses with expertise in IBD, and almost all of the volunteer counselors are IBD patients. Campers are ages 7–16, Counselors-in-Training must be 17 by the first day of camp, and counselors are ages 18 and over. Everyone under age 18 must be cleared by their personal physician, and all volunteers are fingerprinted and background checked. Everyone associated with CAMP GO BeYOND is a volunteer, and the organizing entity, the IBD Summer Camp Foundation, is a 501-c(3) non-profit organization based in San Francisco, California. CAMP GO BeYOND is hosted by the Taylor Family Foundation and is free to everyone thanks to the support of individuals, with Reflect Kindness hosting CAMP GO BeYOND at Camp Arroyo. The camp’s mission is to provide a free camp experience where children ages 7–17 diagnosed with IBD can have fun in a safe, supportive, and nurturing environment. One visitor, Cheryl Jennings, described meeting many kids with serious illnesses at Camp Arroyo who were having a great time at camp and highlighted a young boy who was eager to tell his story on video.
