About

Camp Superstar: Sickle Cell Camp includes activities such as rock climbing, zip lining, horse back riding, archery, water sports, arts and crafts, and s'mores at the camp fire. Campers take part in a dance party with a live DJ and a theme, a Water Wars friendly competition of drinking water, an award ceremony, and sickle cell education done by Sickle Cell 101.

• Ages: 7–17 years old

Camp Superstar: Sickle Cell Camp is specifically for children with sickle cell disease, and qualifications to join include having sickle cell disease and being between the ages of 7–17 years old. Campers and counselors first meet at UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital in Oakland, CA and then travel together on charter buses. The program accepts campers to become Counselors in Training (CIT) at age 16. Campers must be fully vaccinated, and the program follows all rules and guidelines pertaining to COVID-19, including using a Water Wars competition to encourage hydration and help keep campers crisis free. Cabins have heated floors, there is a heated pool, and all accommodations are met for the needs of children with sickle cell disease, with the camp site in the same place every year.

Camp Superstar: Sickle Cell Camp is organized by Calvanay Nunley, who has been part of camp for 24 years, starting as a camper at 7 years old, then becoming a Counselor in Training at 16, later a counselor, and eventually the camp director. The camp is run under Sickle Cell Anemia Awareness of San Francisco (SCAASF), a 501(c)3 non-profit organization that came into existence in 2014 and whose website copyright is 2014–2024. SCAASF states a mission to broaden public awareness about sickle cell disease, advocate for clients and families for access to quality compassionate healthcare, educate to empower, and establish a comprehensive Sickle Cell Disease Care & Resource center in the Bay Area for people living with sickle cell disease to improve care and relations. Their work has received certificates of honor and recognition from Senator Weiner and Mayor Lee. SCAASF is involved in the community through blood drives, the KMJ Warrior Walk, KMJ Wine 'n' Sign, Fitness Day, and UCSF Pre-med Health Conference tabling, and UCSF is running clinical trials for people with sickle cell disease. The Taylor Family Foundation supports many medical camps in Northern California and is involved with this camp. One message shared with campers is, “You are more that your illness - Sickle cell don't have you, You have Sickle Cell” – Calvanay Nunley.
