About

Cabrillo High School Aquarium Summer Camp takes place in a student-run aquarium facility that includes exhibits such as a shark exhibit, touch tank, estuary, crustaceans, octopi, sea cucumbers, Garibaldi, and moon jellies. Campers are able to see moon jellies completing their entire life cycle from polyp to adult and reproducing again, and they can observe a shark hatchery with shark eggs and shark pups. Summer Camp 2026 is sold out.

The Cabrillo High School Aquarium is led by Director Greg Eisen, with advisors Michelle Poquette, Jennifer Mason, and Chris Ladwig. Its stated mission is to promote cross-curricular, hands-on education and to emphasize a message of global marine awareness throughout the international community, while preparing students to go out into the world in their chosen careers. The aquarium is described as a unique, award-winning facility and operates as a non-profit organization. It began as a school club with just a few tanks and grew through the involvement of hundreds of students, teachers, school district staff, and members of the business community locally and nationally. The aquarium hosts thousands of visitors and introduces students to many experts in business and marine science. It runs “Adopt an Exhibit” and “Adopt an Animal” programs supported by named donors, and students are able to receive scholarships to continue their studies in marine science and environmental fields.
