Pools of Hope has provided therapeutic, rehabilitative, and recreational aquatic services for more than six decades, with its history beginning in 1956 in a small backyard pool started by civic leader and professional swimmer Mrs. Evelyn duPont, and it became a nonprofit organization on April 17, 1963. Its mission is to provide a warm water facility promoting whole life wellness in the community, with inclusive, accessible, and affordable aquatic therapeutic programs that specialize in adaptive services for people with special health needs. The organization states that its warm water pools are credited with helping people improve their physical, mental, and social well-being, and it offers services for over 2,000 children, veterans, seniors, and adults with a disability, injury, or chronic condition. Pools of Hope reports that all of its services have been created in response to community needs and that it has been a provider of aquatic specialty services, health education, and supportive services in the South Bay, South Los Angeles, and beyond. One pool member with cerebral palsy shared, “I love the pool and it helps me to feel free from my cerebral palsy. I wish I could live in the water,” and another long-time member stated, “Pools of Hope Keeps Me Dancing!”
