The swim lesson program uses an Olympic-sized swimming pool measuring 50 meters in length and 25 yards in width, with water temperature maintained between 78°–82°F for year-round lap swimming, Masters swim team, and youth programs. Children ages 3 and under swim free with the JFTB Pass, and the first Masters swimming class visit is free. All swimmers must sign in at the Aquatic Office, and military swimmers, including Active Duty, Retirees, and Dependents, swim for free with valid CAC or DoD ID, while Veterans receive a discount with valid ID or DD-214.

Swim tests may be given at the discretion of the lifeguard on duty and consist of a 25 yard front crawl, and any person who does not successfully complete the test must have adult supervision in the water at all times, which is mandatory for children under 3 years old. For the Lifeguard Training Class, candidates must swim 300 yards continuously, tread water for 2 minutes using only the legs, and complete a timed event within 1 minute and 40 seconds that includes a surface dive to a depth of 7 to 10 feet to retrieve a 10-pound object and return it while swimming on the back. Upon completing the Lifeguard Training course, participants receive American Red Cross Lifeguarding with CPR/AED for Professional Rescuers and First Aid certification.

The program is led by Aquatics Coordinator Mia Perez and Senior Lifeguard Samantha Emig. The mission of the broader NAF organization is to provide services, accommodations, and recreational outlets for Soldiers, Families, Civilians, and Retirees using funds generated through NAF operations to protect and support the well-being of military and civilian personnel. The base hosting this program is closely connected to the neighboring communities of Los Alamitos, Cypress, Seal Beach, and Garden Grove, and major events such as the annual Race on the Base in February and the Fourth of July celebration are held there. The 2021 Olympic Gold Medalist Women’s Water Polo team uses the Aquatic Training Center facility, several community user groups reserve hours throughout the week, and the ATC Masters Swim Team program collaborates with Tri-Zone and their athletes.
