• Schedule: Seasonal camps including 4-day Ski Week and Advanced camps and 5-day Spring Break and summer camps, plus weekly private, semi-private, and group lessons available Tuesday–Sunday
• Price: Ski Week and Spring Break camps $700; beginner camps $750; intermediate camps $900; Advanced 4-Day Camp $800; lesson program $400 per month for 1 lesson per week or $800 per month for 2 lessons per week; birthday lessons $55 per rider
Since 2014 and 2015, Victoria Dye Equestrian has been providing lesson programs and riding camps and managing Westwind Community Barn. The program offers beginner, Intermediate 1, Intermediate 2, and Advanced camp levels, with each rider assigned to a horse for the week, daily riding lessons with experienced trainers, mounted games, bareback riding, a trail ride on the last day of Spring Break and Ski Week camps, and a horse show on the last day of the summer camp series. Advanced camp includes instruction with a dressage clinician and a jumping clinician, an evening movie activity, and a concluding horse show that follows a real horse show format with a flat class and a jumping class that are judged with ribbons awarded. Lessons are available for children as young as 6 and adults of any age, and birthday lessons for children ages 5 and older include grooming and riding. It is strongly recommended that campers purchase their own helmets and boots with heels, and a limited amount of equipment is available on a first come, first serve basis.
Owner, Head Trainer, and Barn Manager Torie Dye has been the manager of Westwind Community Barn since 2014 and has been riding since age 7. She was an avid member of United States Pony Club, attended the United States Pony Club National Championships twice, and achieved her C-3 Rating. She studied Animal Science and Equine Science at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, where she was the coach and president of the dressage team, attended the Intercollegiate Dressage Association National Championships twice, placed first individually, and helped her team to a 4th place national ranking. She was a student intern at Pioneer Equine Hospital studying equine medical care and previously worked as assistant trainer at Millers Equestrian Center and Sanctuary and as Director of School Horse Operations at Fremont Hills Stable. The leadership team also includes Scheduling Manager Heather Franco, Instructor Kate Richardson, and Summer Instructor Cam Trepanier.
Westwind Community Barn and Victoria Dye Equestrian are involved in community activities such as regular horse shows and town events, with Victoria Dye Equestrian hosting two horse shows each year and the town of Los Altos Hills hosting five events each year. Discounts are available for residents of the town of Los Altos Hills, including a 10% discount on all lessons and packages, and all camp registration is conducted through the Los Altos Hills Parks and Recreation Department. The Westwind Riding Institute offers a therapeutic riding program for kids with disabilities, and the Los Altos Hills Horsemen's Association sponsors events and advocates for improved horse facilities and trails. The Westwind IEA team finished the year as Region 4 high point for the middle school and high school teams, and the high school team was zone champion.
Parent and student comments describe instructors as “fabulous,” horses as “well mannered and healthy,” and the property as “beautiful and well maintained” with “fantastic” arena footing and “wonderful trails.” Testimonials also state that Westwind barn is “a great barn to be at,” that Torie “always makes sure the facility is safe and clean” and arenas are maintained, and that the program is recommended “whether you are looking to start riding or looking to continue in your training.” Another testimonial notes that “not many barns treat their horses this well and not many trainers are as qualified and as kind as Torie and Roxanne.”
