About
DesignX offers studio-style design programs where students work in areas such as Fashion Design, Soft Toy Design, Wood Toy Design, and Architecture. Each studio immerses students in the full design process from concept to completion, using real materials, real tools, and real-world constraints. The curriculum introduces students to a broad spectrum of design and grows in complexity as their skills deepen.
• Ages: 5–18 years old
• Schedule: One-week design studio-style sessions throughout the summer
For nearly two decades, DesignX has championed and nourished creative intelligence in Silicon Valley youth, and in 2017, Durga Kalavagunta founded DesignX. The DesignX teaching team includes emerging design talent from institutions such as Stanford, UC Berkeley, San Jose State, USC, SFSU, Parsons, RISD, and CMU. The leadership team includes Founder and CEO Durga Kalavagunta, Marketing, Media, and Community Relations lead Hope Patricia Daly, Brand Strategy lead Richa Krishna, Fellowship Coach Eve Gordon, and Fellowship & Operations Lead Leslie S. Valdez. Through the DesignX Fellowship, talented design graduates are selected each summer to lead studios as design educators.
DesignX states that it exists to embolden each child’s unique creative voice through studio-style design programs where young people are taught to dream it, design it, and make it while working with real materials, real constraints, and thoughtful processes. Focus areas in the program include creativity, presence, craftsmanship, confidence, problem-solving, collaboration, and planet stewardship, with an emphasis on human-first creativity in the age of AI. DesignX describes itself as a studio-based design education company serving youth across the San Francisco Bay Area and as a leader in design education for youth that champions a human-first approach to creativity. Since its founding, DesignX reports having served more than 8,000 students, engaged 27 schools, delivered 541 programs, and developed 60 design educators.
DesignX partners with schools, community organizations, and educational institutions to bring design experiences to youth across the country. The program also offers a DesignX Student Fashion Show, with hair and makeup provided by Halo Blow Dry Bar and specialty drinks provided by Murdoch's, both in Los Altos.
Parent testimonials describe DesignX as a favorite program that sparks curiosity and encourages creative thinking, with one parent noting that their daughter is now pursuing Fashion Design at Parsons in New York City after being inspired at DesignX. Parents report that their children ask to return each year, talk enthusiastically about what they did at camp, and feel proud of the fashion pieces they create, such as a skirt made during camp. Several parents mention that their children had a wonderful time, felt taken care of, and are already asking to attend again in future summers.
