The program includes after-school tutoring in all subjects, homework help, and support for English language learners, as well as assistance with student publications. Students also take part in evening and weekend workshops, write stories based on prompts, and can join the Write On! Summer Camp.
• Ages: 6–18 years old
• Schedule: After School Tutoring from Monday to Thursday; Write On! Summer Camp runs June 15, 2026–June 26, 2026
• Price: Through free programs like workshops, tutoring, and field trips
826LA Youth Writing Programs is dedicated to unlocking and cultivating the creative power of writing for students ages 6 to 18, and to helping teachers inspire their students to write. The program includes college access support and a College and Career Access Program that offers one-on-one guidance from trained volunteers for college and scholarship applications. In-school programs and Writers’ Rooms bring trained volunteers into under-resourced public schools to provide one-on-one writing support, and field trips invite public school students to the writing labs for a morning of creativity. Workshops connect students with writers, artists, and professionals, and the program publishes student works so students can see themselves as creators of culture.
826LA Youth Writing Programs serves over 7,000 students across Los Angeles each year and offers free, high-quality writing programs, including free tutoring in all subjects. The Black Writers Initiative, launched in 2022, has a goal to increase the number of Black and African American students in programming by 550 over three years. 826LA partners with schools throughout the city to provide free programs, and every year Angelenos volunteer thousands of hours at 826LA through a volunteer corps that includes writers, artists, and professionals who collaborate with students.
826LA Youth Writing Programs is celebrating 20 years of storytelling, creativity, and community. The organization’s leadership team includes Executive Director Jaime Balboa; Chief of Staff Diego Quevedo; Director of Education Shani Foster; Director of Development Christie Thomas; Programs & Operations Managers Pedro Estrada (Echo Park) and Mike Dunbar (Mar Vista); Associate Director of Community Engagement Mateo Acosta; Store and General Operations Manager for the Time Travel Marts in Echo Park and Mar Vista, Carinne Kemp; Senior Manager of Strategic Partnerships and Communications Alma Carrillo; Senior Manager of Volunteer Innovation and Assessment Trevor Crown; Senior Community Relations Coordinator Ariadne Makridakis Arroyo; Institutional Giving Manager Katie Feige; Tutoring Program Coordinator Arisdeysi Cruz; Writers’ Room Program Coordinators Marco Beltran (Manual Arts High School) and Wendy Beltran (Roosevelt High School); Development Manager Cole Montgomery; Senior Civic Engagement Coordinator Ariana Ponce Olivares; Creative Engagement Specialist Wilson Swain; In-Schools and Tutoring Program Coordinator Julia Malinow; Store Associate Caz Shen; and Field Trips and Operations Coordinator Gabriela Romero.
