The Fernando Pullum Community Arts Center

The Fernando Pullum Community Arts Center offers performing arts education, drama, drumline, choir, tap, jazz band, drums, song writing and music production, step, beginning instruments, dance, and filmmaking. Classes are offered throughout the school year, and students participate in community performances throughout the year. All programming is offered at no cost to families, and students receive free dinner and a snack at the headquarters.

Programs

• Performing arts education — 5-20 · Throughout the school year · Free art instruction. Students receive personalized instruction based on age and level of experience. At least three opportunities for each student to showcase their talent at community performances.
• Drama — 5-20 · Throughout the school year · Students learn the basics of theater production, character development and staging.
• Drumline — 12-18 · Throughout the school year · Students learn essential drumming skills, reading percussion notation and functioning as a team.
• Choir — 9-18 · Throughout the school year · Students are taught proper vocal technique with an emphasis on tone, blend and dynamics.
• Tap — Throughout the school year · Students learn rhythm and musicality.
• Jazz Band — 10-20 · Throughout the school year · Advanced students practice regularly as a group and perform at Pullum Center, community and high profile events.
• Drums — 7-18 · Throughout the school year · Students learn how to play a full drumset and play live with other members of the rhythm section.
• Song Writing & Music Production — 14-20 · Throughout the school year · Students use electronic keyboards to create melodies and orchestration, explore lyrics, and learn digital audio techniques.
• Step — Throughout the school year · Students learn complex rhythms and sounds using hand and body movements along with footstep routines.
• Beginning Instruments — 5-18 · Throughout the school year · Piano, Guitar and Wind Instruments. Students learn fundamentals of music and basic compositions.
• Dance — 5-18 · Throughout the school year · Students learn dance techniques and creative movement and perform in showcases and musical productions.
• Filmmaking — 10-20 · Throughout the school year · Currently on hold. Students write, develop, shoot and edit a narrative film.

About the provider

The mission of The Fernando Pullum Community Arts Center is to provide quality performing arts education to South Central LA youth, inspiring them to envision and pursue their full potential. All students participate in community service projects. Families and communities of students are engaged through live performances throughout the year. Students go on field trips to concerts, museums, and cultural events, and they meet and perform with well-known artists.

All programming is offered at no cost to families. 100% of seniors in the program have graduated high school. 100% of high school students graduated last year.
