About
The Early Child Development Program includes a Free Breakfast and Lunch Program, Nutrition Lessons for Kids, fun fitness activities, music classes for preschoolers, and daily outdoor play when weather allows. Breakfast, lunch, and snacks are all included for enrolled children. Classroom spaces use learning areas that support STEM, literacy, cognition, and social-emotional development, with hands-on learning through play and interaction guided by the High Scope curriculum.
• Ages: 6 weeks–5 years old
• Schedule: Centers are open Monday through Friday, 7:00 AM to 5:30 PM
• Price: Free tuition for qualified low-income families; the early childhood program is completely free for eligible families.
YWCA Greater Los Angeles Early Child Development centers offer child care and preschool services with low teacher-to-child ratios of 1:3 for infants, 1:4 for toddlers, and 1:8 for preschool. Programs are staffed with ECT-qualified professionals, and the approach integrates mental health support when needed and promotes well-being. Naptime is scheduled daily between 12:00 PM and 2:30 PM, and families need to bring childcare supplies such as diapers, clothing, blankets, and bottles. Families receive on-site support and community resources, and the program actively encourages community involvement.
The program is ranked by Quality Start Los Angeles (QSLA) as Tier 5 High-Quality Centers. YWCA Greater Los Angeles has been active since 1894. The mission of YWCA Greater Los Angeles is stated as: “YWCA IS ON A MISSION Eliminating Racism, Empowering Women and Promoting Peace, Justice, Freedom and Dignity for all.” Leadership for the organization includes Lori Carmona, Chief Executive Officer; Kwame Dow, Chief People & Strategy Officer; and Erica Mangham, Chief Development Manager. One program teacher notes that food preparation activities, such as making parfaits for an afternoon snack, involve children of all ages and include math, science, language, social, emotional, and cognitive development, as well as fine motor skills.
