About

KEEN Los Angeles offers sponsored, non-competitive, one-on-one programs of physical activity and fun, including KEEN Sports, KEEN Swim, KEEN Yoga, and KEENFit. KEEN Sports takes place in a gym with a variety of sports equipment available. With KEEN’s approach, almost any activity is possible, and in this non-competitive environment every child can enjoy nearly every activity.

• Price: providing free recreational opportunities to children and young adults with disabilities

KEEN’s mission is to empower youth with disabilities and impact volunteer coaches through participation in sponsored, non-competitive, one-on-one programs of physical activity and fun, supporting the overall health and well-being of all participants. KEEN welcomes every child, regardless of the nature or severity of his or her disability, and its core principles include accepting every child on this basis. KEEN’s programs are one-to-one and non-competitive, and KEEN meets the needs of the individual athlete. KEEN participants gain confidence and make new friends. KEEN provides a wide array of sponsored services, and KEEN staff can arrange communication in Spanish.

The KEEN Los Angeles local Board of Directors is comprised of community leaders, parents, and volunteers. KEEN Los Angeles is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization and an affiliate of KEEN USA, which is headquartered in Washington, DC and operates programs in Chicago, Greater Washington DC, New York, San Francisco, St. Louis, and Los Angeles. KEEN USA is a GuideStar Gold Participant, and a Gold Seal status is described as the leading symbol of non-profit transparency and accountability. KEEN is modeled on an innovative program established in Oxford, England by Elliott Portnoy, who brought KEEN to the Washington, DC area in 1992, and KEEN notes that it is celebrating 30+ years of service. KEEN’s vision includes developing partnerships to actively promote disability awareness. KEEN volunteers include individuals and young professionals, college and high school students, and corporate and community volunteer groups, and volunteering for KEEN offers opportunities for occasional participation, regular involvement, and program leadership.
