About
Our Big Kitchen Los Angeles School Programs involve children cooking meals for people in need and baking baked goods in a group setting. The program takes place in a kosher industrial kitchen and uses only Kosher ingredients under the guidance of a seasoned chef. Children cook as part of a broader community-run, non-denominational kitchen that also hosts corporate team building cooking events and parties and events involving cooking together.
Our Big Kitchen Los Angeles operates as a community run, non-denominational kitchen that prepares meals for distribution to those in need throughout Los Angeles. The organization states that everyone is entitled to a nutritious, tasty, and high-quality meal made with compassion and that food has the power to bring people together within and across communities, nourish those in need, and hold a purpose for those who seek to make a positive impact. It also states that individuals have the desire to address food insecurity and are deserving of valuable volunteer opportunities, and that kind deeds enrich the individual who performs them and have a multiplying effect on improving the world.
The kitchen space is a memorial to Holocaust survivor Margaret Feder and serves as a sacred space and tribute to her story. The program focuses on teaching children kindness by having them cook meals for people in need and allowing them to interact with their peers in a meaningful way through school programs. The organization emphasizes creating a joyful atmosphere and making volunteers feel valued and proud of their impact.
Our Big Kitchen originated in Sydney, Australia, in February 2005. In March 2020, Yossi and Chaya Segelman began activities in Los Angeles, and in June 2022, the Feder Family gifted Our Big Kitchen Los Angeles a 4,600 sq ft space. The leadership team includes Steven Feder (Board Chair), Yossi Segelman (Executive Director), Chaya Segelman (Program Director), and additional roles such as program leaders, chefs, marketing, social media, and program administration.
Every meal cooked at Our Big Kitchen Los Angeles is distributed by charity partners across Los Angeles, including organizations such as Pico Union Project, Mercy Housing, Aaron's Pantry - Northridge, 580 Cafe, Global Kindness, Safe Parking LA, Jewish Russian Community Centre, and many others.
