The Preschool Program includes training in optimizing the use of remaining vision, sensory development, orientation and mobility including cane travel, and pre-braille literacy. Children also take part in adaptive outdoor play on two playgrounds. Preschool classrooms are fully inclusive, with approximately half of the children having vision loss or other disabilities and the other half being typically developing children. The program implements the Creative Curriculum for all children and provides individualized support for students who are blind or visually impaired, with sighted children integrated in each class.

Blind Children’s Center has been “Lighting The Way” since 1938 and prepares infants, toddlers, and preschoolers of all abilities through inclusive, family-focused early childhood education. Its mission states that Blind Children’s Center prepares infants, toddlers, and preschoolers of all abilities to thrive through inclusive, family-focused early childhood education, with a specialized focus on children who are blind or visually impaired. The program offers adaptive outdoor play on two playgrounds across a one-acre campus and provides healthy breakfast, lunch, and snack. It operates as a Head Start program with services focusing on the whole child and family, including health, mental health, and nutrition, and follows a family-focused approach where parents, siblings, grandparents, and caregivers are included in the educational process every step of the way. The program is licensed by the Department of Social Services under License Number 191805057.
