RIE Parent-Infant Guidance Classes offer parent-infant guidance sessions where parents observe their infant or toddler moving, exploring, and playing while learning how to support their ongoing development. These classes follow Magda Gerber’s respectful Educaring Approach, in which caregiving is described as the curriculum and infants are treated as active participants while being cared for. The program is part of RIE’s integrated model for the care and education of infants and very young children using this Educaring Approach.
• Ages: 0–2 years old
The program is based on the view that infants need an intimate, stable relationship with at least one adult, and that this relationship is best developed during caregiving activities. It emphasizes that infants need a safe, carefully designed environment in which to move, explore, and manipulate objects, and that spontaneous, self-initiated activities have essential value for physical and mental development. In this approach, the Educarer learns to observe, understand, and respect the individuality of each infant, and RIE is described as an accessible, two-generation, integrated approach to caring for babies from birth to two years old that supports development across social-emotional, perceptual/motor/physical, cognitive, language acquisition and communication, and approach to learning domains.
RIE Associates, who offer RIE-certified parent and professional courses, facilitate the full set of professional and parent courses at the RIE Center in Pasadena and all of the RIE classes at the Hollywood location, and they also facilitate online versions of all of the RIE classes. RIE’s Online Center provides online versions of all of the RIE classes for parents or professionals. Fifty years ago, Magda Gerber introduced this way of seeing infants “with new eyes,” which is described as having revolutionized infant care in the U.S.
One parent described the RIE Parent-Infant Guidance class as “a lifeline,” saying they learned to listen, observe, and trust their baby rather than impose their will, and that the guidance made them more present, compassionate, and trusting parents. Another parent shared that the support, guidance, and community found in RIE have been “a godsend” throughout their experience as first-time parents, and that the concepts and principles of RIE are “a lighthouse” as they watch their son grow and develop. A RIE Foundations student said they learned what respect means when applied to infants and toddlers, and that trust and confidence are as important from adult to child as from child to adult. A childcare provider described the RIE Foundations course as a rich and personal experience and “truly life-changing,” and said the most noticeable change in their work would be slowing their pace, which they believe will benefit the children and themselves.
